Piano tuning & care

Flagstaff · Sedona

Skilled, unhurried service for your piano’s sound, touch, and long-term performance.

Tuning & pitch correction

A good tuning brings clarity and balance to the piano, from quiet passages to full chords. I assess the instrument’s pitch and condition, then tune with careful attention to the relationships between notes and the character of the piano.

Northern Arizona’s seasonal humidity changes affect pitch. I generally recommend tuning twice a year, with the timing suited to the instrument, its environment, and how it is used.

When more than a tuning is needed

A piano that has drifted substantially from its intended pitch may need pitch correction before fine tuning. This takes additional time and is quoted separately from routine tuning.

If your piano has not been tuned regularly, please mention that when you contact me. We’ll discuss likely needs before the visit, and I’ll confirm any additional work and cost with you before proceeding.

Concert preparation

Concert service is tailored to the instrument, the artist’s needs, and the performance schedule. Please get in touch to discuss rehearsal and concert requirements.

Voicing

If the piano sounds harsh, uneven, or difficult to control at softer volumes, tuning alone may not address the problem. Voicing refines the character and consistency of the tone by working with the hammers and how they meet the strings.

I assess the tuning, action, and hammer condition first, then discuss what can realistically be achieved. Light tonal adjustments may suit a maintenance visit; worn or uneven hammers can require more extensive work.

Piano cleaning

Careful interior and exterior cleaning removes accumulated dust and debris from the piano’s case, soundboard, keybed, and accessible action components. The work is matched to the piano’s condition and finish.

Cleaning is discussed and quoted separately from tuning.

Repairs & assessment

Sticking keys, unreliable pedals, unwanted noises, and broken or worn parts each need a proper diagnosis. I look for the cause of the problem and explain the available repair options.

Some repairs can be completed during a tuning visit; others require parts or workshop time. Before substantial work, we’ll discuss the piano’s overall condition, your goals, and whether the investment makes sense.

Regulation & reconditioning

Regulation adjusts the piano’s action so the keys and hammers respond more evenly and predictably. It can improve control, repetition, and the ability to play softly—qualities that tuning alone cannot restore.

A well-maintained action may need only small corrections. Worn felt, leather, or other components may need reconditioning or replacement before precise regulation is worthwhile. That initial corrective work is separate from ongoing maintenance.

Depending on the work, I may service the action in your home or bring it to the workshop, with final adjustments made at the piano. Scope and timing are discussed after assessment.

Plan your piano’s care

My fees reflect the time, skill, and attention required to do the work properly. Recommendations are based on your piano’s condition and your musical goals.

Before booking, we’ll discuss the appropriate visit, expected cost, and any travel charges. If an assessment identifies further work, I’ll explain the options and obtain your approval before proceeding.

Tell me your location, the piano’s make, when it was last tuned, and any concerns about its sound or touch. Whether you need an initial assessment or ongoing care, we can plan the right next step.
